The Science and the Scientist!

'Doctor, do you believe in Astrology?' I was asked. 'Why do you ask?' I asked her. 'I don't know, I just wanted to ask you because you read a lot. My friend's astrologer predicted something and everything came true, but when my astrologer predicted a bliss wedding, mine ended in a sour note,' she said.
'So?', I asked. 'Do you think there could be something right about Astrology?' she persisted.

How often have you heard the words, "Does Ayurveda work for Diabetes?" Or for that matter, 'Does acupuncture work for weight loss?' Pretty often uh? But in another way, how often have YOU wondered the same thing? May not be for diabetes or weight loss but for some other medical problem that you might have? But have you ever heard the words, 'Does Allopathy work for Heart Attack?' Or have YOU ever felt this way?

Great. Now, let's look another common fallacy that I hear this all the time. 'Doctor, I went to the orthopedic surgeon and the procedure didn't work. Do you know of another good ortho doctor, doctor?' What's wrong with that statement? Absolutely nothing. Let's look at another example. 'Doctor, this medicine is not working for me. Is the diagnosis correct? Did the doctor treat me correctly?' Is there anything wrong with that question? Nothing is wrong. So, next statement. 'Doctor, I went to this Ayurvedic doctor for weight loss and it didn't work. I don't think Ayurveda works for weight loss.' Or when you talk to a friend. 'Hey, yes, I tried Acupuncture for smoking de-addiction. It didn't work.' What's wrong with this statement? EVERYTHING.

When Allopathy doesn't work, our brain is forced into thinking that the science is right, but the administration is wrong. When Ayurveda or Acupuncture or Astrology or any other science which we are not fully exposed to goes wrong, our brain tends to think that the science is at fault. When in reality, the fault is with the scientist!

When Newton was asked by his contemporaries as to why he believed in 'foolish matters like astrology', he replied, 'sir, I have studied the science, you haven't.' Its not just astrology, but every science is beautiful. Sometimes we know all of it, sometimes we know nothing of it, but that doesn't mean that the science doesn't exist. Modern science has a lot of money and has a lot of research, ancient sciences are, though being proved to have a lot of merit, not being pursued for various reasons.

The problem is that the bad scientists are bringing a bad name to the science. If a particular Ayurvedic treatment didn't work, then the Ayurvedic diagnosis might be wrong. The treatment might be wrong. The doctor might be incompetent. But Ayurveda is not wrong. Astrology is not wrong. Can you get a heart surgery done with acupuncture anesthesia? Oh yes. Can every self proclaimed acupuncturist do that anesthesia? Nope!

So the next time you see somebody does something wonderful, it is not luck. He or she has learnt the science well enough to practice it. And the next time you see something fail, its not bad. He or she has not learnt the science well enough to practice it.

Adios!
