Healthy Eating Out? Really?

"Is this healthy?"

"How many calories in this gravy?"

"Waiter, can you ask the chef to make a non fat version of this dish?"

Are you looking for healthy options when you eat out? Awesome.  How about when you are on a holiday? Or when you are out with the family for dinner? Or that special occasion? Questions like the ones above are more common than you think. Maybe you've asked that question a few times yourself. Or maybe not.

What if I told you that it is pretty useless to eat healthy when you are out? Nope, not that it is better to eat unhealthy greasy food, but in the long run, what you might be doing is not much good to yourself PLUS a less tasty meal when you spend money to have a good time!! Let's do the math!

How many meals do you eat out in a week? 1? 2? 3? 4 maybe? That is about 16 meals in a month. Maybe about 200 meals in a year? Great. How often do you eat at home? 3 meals a day? That is about 21 meals a week. Minus the 4 you ate outside and we have about 17 meals a week. That is about 510 meals a month. Which is about 6120 meals a year.

Now, when you eat so much junk at home, sometimes under the guise of 'healthy' eating, ask yourself, if the 200 meals you ate out caused all the weight gains and heart attacks? When I say home meals, I mean the food you eat regularly. On a routine basis. If you eat at the canteen every day, then that is the meal you need to focus your 'healthy eating' on.

Very often, we eat poorly at home and then try to eat healthy during celebrations, dinners etc. The obsession and the fad of healthy eating has caught itself in all the wrong places! The same thing applies to festivals. Very often I am asked how to keep oneself fit during Diwali! My answer is eat whatever you want to eat during Diwali! That way your heart is happy!! Rarely has the diwali sweet or the Ramzan biriyani killed anybody! It is our daily cooking that kills!

Eating healthy is an art. And part of that art is to know when to let go and give yourself a treat! Remember that what you do on a day to day basis is what keeps you healthy or sick! Not the ones you eat less often!
